SPLIT (20 km away from the Apartments Babaja)
Split is the main urban, cultural and transport center of Dalmatia. Split is a 1700 year old city and is included in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites because of its numerous archaeological, historical and cultural monuments, especially Diocletian’s palace, which is the center of the city. It has all the attractiveness and wealth of a modern Mediterranean city and it lives in a slow rhythm which is very easy to get used to. The first citizen of Split was Emperor Diocletian who had the famous Diocletian’s palace built, by which we recognize the city today. Apart from the palace, there are also many other historical monuments in Split, such as the Iron Gate (this is the only gate through which life passed for 17 centuries), Golden Gate (Emperor Diocletian entered through this gate on June 1st, 305), Silver Gate (less decorated than the Golden Gate, its multilayered history was crowned by the passing of Pope Wojtila through it in his popemobile), Brass Gate (completely different from the other three gates, secured seaside escape in case of attack on the palace), Cathedral of St. Duje (cathedral is located in the oldest building in Europe - Diocletian’s mausoleum), main court (meant for appearances of Diocletian where his people would bow to him and kiss the hem of his cape), basements (the best maintained ancient complex meant for raising the level of the Emperors apartment), vestibule (empire’s foyer), Benedictine Monastery of St. Euphemia (first pre – Romanic church ever built along the walls of the palace in the 11th century), Chapel of St. Martin above the Golden Gate, late Antiquity church of St. Theodore above the Iron Gate and many other cultural monuments.
Split has many wonderful beaches, of which the best known are Bačvice (sand), Žnjan (pebble), Kaštelet (pebble), Kašjuni (pebble), Bene (pebble and rock), Trstenik (pebble), Firule (sand) and Ovčice (pebble). Split has a rich cultural and entertainment offer, especially during the summer when the city’s squares, yards and other locations become a large stage under the clear sky.
MAKARSKA (35 km away from the Apartments Babaja)
Makarska is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the Croatian coast which is attractive because of its natural and climate characteristics and diverse tourist offering. It is one of the most beautiful pearls of the Adriatic and is the center of the region better known as Makarska Rivijera. It is settled at the bottom of Biokovo Mountain and is comprised of a Mediterranean – style old town and a newer part with hotels, restaurants, shops and others. The first known inhabitants of Makarska were the Illyrians. The first proof of the ancient settlement Inariona dates back to the first half of the 4th century. In the official records of the Salona Parliament of the year 533, Mucurum is mentioned as a town where a diocese was formed. This city has gone through a long history and resisted many conquerors, making it one of the most beautiful destinations of the Adriatic. This city has several historical monuments and museums. If you wish to get better acquainted with its history, you can visit the Franciscan monastery (houses a pinacotheca, library, unique Malacological museum and the “Mountain and Sea Institute”), churches of St. Mark, St. Peter and St. Philip, city museum and others. The multiple kilometer long beaches are well known for their clean sand, quiet of the pine tree woods and clear sea. One of them is home of the well known “Buba” beach bar which is a favorite destination for party-goers and where you will always encounter an upbeat atmosphere and lots of young people. The younger generations can also find entertainment in the following bars and clubs: “Art Caffe”, “Deep” (currently the most popular summer outing), “Marineta”, “West”, “Petar Pan”, “Escape” and others. For those who do not feel the desire to party until the dawn, can enjoy the Makarska Cultural Summer which offers plays, classical and popular music concerts, Dalmatian choir concerts, exhibits in galleries and museums, poetry readings, folklore performances, Fishermen’s Evening, summer carnival and the evenings of Kalelarga.
Those who enjoy an active vacation can take part in various sports activities such as soccer, futsal, basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, handball, bowling, bocce ball, fitness or various water sports such as wind surfing, scuba diving, jet ski, fishing and surfing.
DUBROVNIK (180 km away from the Apartments Babaja)
Dubrovnik is one of the most attractive and well-known destinations in the Mediterranean. The city is known worldwide for its cultural heritage and its remarkable beauty. The many churches and sacred buildings, the city walls, fortresses and museums, fascinate every visitor with its exceptional historical value. Numerous pebble, stone and concrete beaches provide fun and comfort throughout the day and night. With such a variety ofbeaches everyone can find a spot for himself and for his taste. You can enjoy romantic hidden coves or the luxurious amenities of popular beaches. The most famous beaches is called Šunj, located on island of Lopud, the next is Banja, than Lapad bay andCopacabana. Sports lovers can enjoy swimming, horseback riding, water polo, fishing, sailing, tennis, diving and many other activities. Do not miss visiting Elaphite islands, Mljet National Park and Lokrum (island of love). Did you know? - Dubrovnik is named after the forest, which the locals call Dubrava and was located on the hill of Srđ. On the south side of the hill it slopes down towards the sea and the city of Dubrovnik, in the northwest to the Dubrovnik river, in the north to Šumeta and the east all the way to the Parish of Dubrovnik.
Krka National Park (90 km away from the Apartments Babaja)
River Krka is a phenomenon, while making its way to the Adriatic sea; it forms many lakes, falls and water currents. Originating from the base of the Dinara Mountains, by the town of Knin; because of the natural beauty and geological characteristics around the Krka River was declared a National park in 1985. The park encompass' and area of 109 km2 and follows along the river Krka about 2 km down river from Knin to Skradin.
The most impressive, and visited waterfalls are Skradinski buk and Roški falls. Roški falls are very accessible and can be visited year round. 650m of river create 12 water falls, with a total height of 27m. On the left side of the river Krka there are mills (used for processing wheat and corn) some of which are still in use today.
From Roški falls the river once again turns into an elongated lake named Visovac. There is a little islet in the middle of the lake and it is the name of this islet - Visovac; where the lake got its name from. On the islet there is a church and Franciscan monastery which add secrecy to the lake and islet. The first settlers on the island were Augustinians (nomads) in the 14th century and it was them who built the church and monastery. In the year 1440 Franciscans arrive from Bosnia, who were chased away by the Turkish invasion. They were able to stay there until today, bringing with them their valuable collection of books, art, and even 630 Turkish documents.
Skradinski buk is considered one of the most beautiful cliff water falls in Europe. You can see them with a walk through a Forrest on a wooden path and bridges. The river Krka is rich with various species of fish, 10 of which are endemic. The great number of birds in National park Krka is also considered a haven and one of the most valuable areas in Europe.
Swimming is allowed only in authorised zones, the park can be visited by boat or from Skradin by foot.
